The first casting of this pioneering woman giving birth was commissioned by an art loving gynecologist friend who collected birthing sculptures. It was fun for me to imagine the scene along the wagon trail of a woman assisting the expectant mother while her worried husband looks on.
After I had finished the sculpture, the doctor placed it in his waiting room. The receptionist told me she overheard a lady commenting to her friend that she was shocked that the doctor would place the sculpture where children could see it. Well, the secret’s out! New babies don’t come from under a cabbage leaf any more. ~Pamela
