Catching Breakfast

By Pamela Harr

bronze sculpture of a little girl with cats and a milk cow
bronze sculpture of milk cow, little girl and cats

Barn cats gather when it’s milking time.

I have great memories of my mother milking our family cow, Lena, when I was very young. When I was teenager, it was my job to milk the cow. I was always surrounded by an audience of hopeful cats waiting for a few squirts of milk direct from the source. I still remember the creamy foam on the surface of the bucket full of warm milk. I’ll also never forget how the cow’s tail would slap me right in the mouth if I had not payed attention to keeping it caught in the crook of my knee or tied around her leg!
