Bottle Baby

Bronze sculpture of rancher feeding orphan calf with a bottle.

by Pamela Harr

There is nothing so cute as feeding a newborn calf.  We had buckets with nipples on the bottom made especially to hang on a fence rail. We would fill them with milk, then it didn’t take long for little bum calves to get the hang of drinking from their buckets.  I was told that baby calves have a natural instinct to butt their mother’s udder to get her to let down her milk. We would have to hold the buckets or the calves would butt them off the rail.
