By Harvey Rattey
A rancher stands at a break in his fence looking at tire tracks and his “No Trespassing” sign on the ground. Harvey said that this was a common occurrence during hunting season. At one time, Harvey was a shareholder and foreman on a 2,000 head, 44,000 acre grazing association that had more than 100 miles of fence. Checking fence on horseback was one of Harvey’s favorite jobs. The ranch was up on the Montana Highline. Harvey spoke of it as a place where a man could saddle his horse in the morning and ride at an easy lope in any direction for most of the day without ever seeing another person.
