by Harvey Rattey
Harvey won Sculptor of the Year for this sculpture at the National Wild Turkey Federation’s Annual Show in Charleston, South Carolina. I heard him say that calling turkeys was more exciting than hunting big game. One spring he was guiding for another hunter in the Black Hills of South Dakota. As he enticed a turkey closer and closer, the hunter whispered that the turkey was exhibiting the most perfect three-quarter strut he’d ever seen. He explained that the tom had not fully fanned his tail. As he walked, his head turned from side to side so he could watch his rear in case a predator should attack from behind.
