by Harvey Rattey
Harvey had an old friend who was a doctor. This friend shared the story of his grandfather’s terrifying encounter with wolves in the early 1900s. While hauling beef from his ranch to Lewistown, Montana in the dead of winter, he and his team of horses crossed paths with a pack of wolves. The rancher was unarmed, but as the horses ran for their lives, he was somehow able to hold off the wolves with his whip. Harvey captured the true story of the frightened horses racing to stay ahead of the wolves. To give the illusion of speed and motion, Harvey depicted the wagon wheels without spokes.
