Milk Maid

by Pamela Harr

The old hand-driven cream separator is a marvel of engineering. You don’t see them in use any more except as containers holding flowers. Harvey’s mother told me that selling the cream was what paid the bills until the crops were harvested and sold. She would meet the train along the Montana highline every few days to send cream to be sold in town. I searched my neighborhood for old separators. I found this one, which has the best design, not far from home. I obtained permission from the owners, then sat in their yard and sculpted the machine in wax. I added the little girl to the scene before casting it in bronze.

Right side view of a little pioneer girl pouring milk into a cream separator.
