Monday’s Wash

Bronze sculpture of a pioneer girl hanging clothes on a line while her cat plays at her feet.

by Pamela Harr

The fresh scent of sun-dried laundry just off the clothesline is one of my favorite memories. Harvey recalled his mother hanging clothes out to freeze-dry in sub-zero weather. The laundry would get stiff as a board and she would bring it inside to thaw. Unfortunately, sometimes the clothespins would freeze to the fabric of Harvey’s Levi’s, then tear holes in his jeans when they were pulled off the line. He remembers getting little spots of frostbite on his legs wherever there was a hole.
